I want to thank everyone who came out to my bands performance at Sparkles, especially the 2 or 3 peeps who dressed up as Tom Sellek. The pit that was formed on our new version of \"Fred the Beaver\" (Episode 143 - Tom is driving and pulls over to groom his mustache when he sees 4 small chinese children smuggling beavers in their van), I thought was most excellent. Thanks again I will post with our new show, probably close to cumming.
slammy : 1/16/09 11:37:44 AM EST
btw, come see my Tom Sellek tribute band at the sparkles skate rink on beaver ruin feb 14th.
slammy : 1/16/09 11:35:52 AM EST
i thought backwards it said \"lasagna in a bread can, slim jim\". i guess your interpretation makes more sense. maybe i need to quit eating so many slim jims.
john : 12/16/08 08:49:11 PM EST
i don\'t know what it is forwards, but i think that when you play it backwards it says \"baker is dead, man. miss him\"
Jayne : 12/12/08 12:35:19 PM EST
The first line to \"Bethany\" is \"Oh my Bethany/ The_______________________________________\"Could someone tell me please?!
Beth : 6/3/08 12:35:39 AM EST

STORY 2 (part II): Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings. Forget the hashed metaphor. He was ransacking the stores for a present. He found it at last. Twenty-one dollars they took from him for it, and he hurried home with the 87 cents. When Wes reached home his intoxication gave way a little to prudence and reason. He got out his curling irons and lighted the gas and went to work repairing the ravages made by generosity added to love. Which is always a tremendous task, dear friends--a mammoth task. Within forty minutes his head was covered with tiny, close-lying curls that made him look wonderfully like a truant schoolboy. He looked at his reflection in the mirror long, carefully, and critically. "If (she)Wes doesn't kill me," he said to himself, "before she takes a second look at me, she'll say I look like a Coney Island chorus girl. But what could I do--oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty- seven cents?" At 7 o'clock the coffee was made and the frying-pan was on the back of the stove hot and ready to cook the chops. (she)Wes was never late. He heard her step on the stair away down on the first flight, and he turned white for just a moment. He had a habit for saying a little silent prayer about the simplest everyday things, and now he whispered: "Please God, make her think I am still pretty." The door opened and (she)Wes stepped in and closed it. She looked thin and very serious. Poor woman, she was only twenty-two--and to be burdened with a family! She needed a new overcoat and she was without gloves. (she)Wes stopped inside the door, as immovable as a setter at the scent of quail. Her eyes were fixed upon Wes, and there was an expression in them that he could not read, and it terrified him. It was not anger, nor surprise, nor disapproval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments that he had been prepared for. She simply stared at him fixedly with that peculiar expression on her face. Wes wriggled off the table and went for her. "(she)Wes, darling," he cried, "don't look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without a present. It'll grow out again--you won't mind, will you? I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast. Say `Merry Christmas!' (she)Wes, and let's be happy." "You've cut off your hair?" asked (she)Wes, laboriously, as if she had not arrived at that patent fact yet even after the hardest mental labor. "Cut it off and sold it," said Wes. "Don't you like me just as well, anyhow? I'm me without my hair, ain't I?" (she)Wes looked about the room curiously. "You say your hair is gone?" she said, with an air almost of idiocy. "You needn't look for it," said Wes. "It's sold, I tell you--sold and gone, too. It's Christmas Eve. Be good to me. Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered," he went on with sudden serious sweetness, "but nobody could ever count my love for you. Shall I put the chops on, (she)Wes?" Out of her trance (she)Wes seemed quickly to wake. She enfolded her Wes. For ten seconds let us regard with discreet scrutiny some inconsequential object in the other direction. Eight dollars a week or a million a year--what is the difference? A mathematician or a wit would give you the wrong answer. The magi brought valuable gifts, but that was not among them. This dark assertion will be illuminated later on. (she)Wes drew a package from her overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table. "Don't make any mistake, Wes," she said, "about me. I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my man any less. But if you'll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first." White fingers and nimble tore at the string and paper. And then an ecstatic scream of joy; and then, alas! a quick change to hysterical tears and wails, necessitating the immediate employment of all the comforting powers of the lord of the flat. For there lay The Combs--the set of combs, side and back, that Wes had worshipped long in a Buckhead window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims--just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, he knew, and his heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession. And now, they were his, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone. But he hugged them to his bosom, and at length he was able to look up with dim eyes and a smile and say: "My hair grows so fast, (she)Wes!" "You mentioned you sold your hair," said (she)Wes "and a present?" "Yes," replied Wes. Onto the table he droped four packs of cigarettes. "There was a carton," said Wes, "but I smoked most of 'em before you got home. I got 'em counted, too, so don't you go takin' any."
the tattler : 5/18/06 03:55:23 PM EST
STORY 2 (part I): One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Wes counted it. One dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Wes did it. A furnished apartment at $8 per week. It did not exactly beggar description, but it certainly had that word on the lookout for the mendicancy squad. In the vestibule below was a letter-box into which no letter would go, and an electric button from which no mortal finger could coax a ring. Also appertaining thereunto was a card bearing the name "Mr. Wesley Hoffmann - Smoker." The "Smoker" had been flung to the breeze during a former period of prosperity when its possessor was being paid $30 per week. Now, when the income was shrunk to $20, though, they were thinking seriously of contracting to a modest and unassuming "Smo". But whenever Mr. Wesley Hoffmann came home and reached his flat above he was called "Wes" and greatly hugged by Mrs. Wesley Hoffmann - also called Wes, er, (she)Wes. Which is all very good. Wes finished his cry and attended to his cheeks with the powder rag. He stood by the window and looked out dully at a gray cat walking a gray fence in a gray backyard. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and he had only $1.87. He had been saving every penny he could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars a week doesn't go far. Expenses had been greater than he had calculated. They always are. Only $1.87. There was a pier-glass between the windows of the room. Perhaps you have seen a pier-glass in an $8 apartment. A very thin and very agile person may, by observing his reflection in a rapid sequence of longitudinal strips, obtain a fairly accurate conception of his looks. Wes, being slender, had mastered the art. Suddenly he whirled from the window and stood before the glass. His eyes were shining brilliantly, but his face had lost its color within twenty seconds. Rapidly he pulled down his hair and let it fall to its full length. Now, there were two possessions of the Hoffmans in which they both took a mighty pride. One was (she)Wes's gold watch that had been her father's and her grandfather's. The other was Wes's hair. Had the queen of Sheba lived in the apartment across the airshaft, Wes would have let his hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gifts. Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, (she)Wes would have pulled out her watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy. So now Wes's beautiful hair fell about him rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters. It reached below his knee and made itself almost a garment for him. And then he did it up again nervously and quickly. Once he faltered for a minute and stood still while a tear or two splashed on the worn red carpet. On went his old brown jacket; on went his old brown hat. With a whirl and with the brilliant sparkle still in his eyes, he fluttered out the door and down the stairs to the street. Where he stopped the sign read: "Mne. Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." One flight up Wes ran, and collected himself, panting. Madame, large, too white, chilly, hardly looked the "Sofronie." "Will you buy my hair?" asked Wes. "I buy hair," said Madame. "Take yer hat off and let's have a sight at the looks of it." Down rippled the brown cascade. "Twenty dollars," said Madame, lifting the mass with a practiced hand. “Give it to me quick," said Wes.

tune in tuesday thru thursday for three stories about the adventures of second shift. then, see if you can spot the fake! STORY 1: recently, baker was diagnosed with a brain menotominosis(is). doctors gave him three weeks to live. he was whisked to the hospital and, because he's comfortable in pink, assigned to the pediatric ward. he shared a room with a 12-year-old girl named sally. sally's kidneys were failing. without a donor, sally, too, had just three weeks to live. baker and sally became friends. they talked about boys. they painted each other's nails and braided each other's hair. they put nair in each other's shampoo. sally wanted to be a scientist so she could end world hunger. baker wanted to singy-sing in a band so he didn't have to pay cover. at night, baker thought about life. with her malfunctioning kidneys, sally would never drink a beer or make kissy-kissy with courtney love. why did life have to be so cruel? he prayed to jesus. clearly, the lord had placed these two in the same room for a reason. then, it came to him. why should two lives be wasted? baker made up his mind. he convinced the doctors there was only one option - a transplant. the next morning, sally's brain was removed. baker had his new noodle. baker took sally's kidneys, too, because, hey, why waste a week's worth of kidneys?

The show @ the nick on the 4th rocked.(I am still trying to sweat out all of the natty lite out though) You guys kicked ass and i am looking forward to future shows. The Garage is my new spot to chill (eventhough it is cash only). that is an assault waiting to happen with all of those trendy folks carring that much cash on them. anyway Keep on rockin 2nd Shift and Baker....keep it in the short grass.

that's a lewd act on a rival band's message board, and, coming from a twelve-year-old, it's gross. minus two action points for you my prepubescent friend.
slap that bass...

so... i'm the talented young bass player from the empties. and though i would love to talk about how great the shifty boys did, i'm here for another reason. i'm not really 12. that's misconception. ladies, all you need to be aware of is that... im "old enough" eh? eh?
Christina : 2/15/06 11:31:36 PM EST
The Saturday (2/12) show was pretty rad. Another night at Tasty World with Second Shift...duh, who wouldn't want to be there?! After experiencing my first Shift show in the fall of last year and realizing that this is what the Athens scene REALLY needs. I and everyone else that has been listeners were not short handed and sang along to all the songs from the cd...that or tried to get away from some jock-o claimin to be rockers. The two openers were decent. The Empties lead singer reminded me of another local Athens band, Bain Mattox with his vox, but The Empties had some catchy hooks and the bass player was surprisingly talented (my friend tried to say he was no older than 12). *haha*
Either way, I'm sure anyone that is heading to the show @ The Roxy will be uber satisfied with their dose of Second Shift...if not, drink up until the music sounds good.

"Second Shift. "Boozed and Bruised." Self-released. Grade: B
The guitars ooze sleaze and dissipation without losing the pop appeal that bursts from these compact, hooky songs. Tunes like "Power in Numbers" are clenched tight as a fist and carry the same hint of danger, but they're crisp and clean enough to be accessible. "Art of Compromise" and "Gun of a Son" call to mind the chunky pop of criminally under-appreciated Irish rockers Ash, and that's a wonderful thing. Bonus points for the kicky little stick figures in the booklet representing guest players such as ever-reliable producer Geoff Melkonian, Clay Cook and Mike Mantione."

jesus! a copy to the trivia girl? that's the most *blatant* violation of copyright i've ever seen! baker has hairdoos and girly belts to pay for, ya know. and in a modern twist on the merchant of venice (who knew this board was so goddamn educational!), rumor has it that beauregard laid down a pound of his goldie locks as collateral to finance the record.
jimmyrock : 1/4/06 11:50:50 AM EST
Just wanted to let everyone know that the shift has been getting some consistent airplay at rocky mountain pizza by ga. tech during trivia on tuesday and wednesday nights. i gave the trivia girl my album to download to her ipod and she has been playing them ever since. usually she mentions the name of the band too for a little slice of promo for the boys.

From ajc.com:
• Atlanta is an R&B and hip-hop hot spot. It has big-time rock producers in Brendan O'Brien and Butch Walker. It also provided one of country's biggest breakthrough acts last year, Sugarland. Maybe we can get one of our many stalwart rock bands —Second Shift, the Whigs and the Swear come to mind — into the upper reaches of the charts.

#1 fan : 10/14/05 02:59:23 PM EST
did anybody else get the e-mail listing all the people they have DJing at the after-party? they must be spending thousands of dollars on this release party to get that caliber of talent.

spector : 10/11/05 01:26:30 PM EST
these guys do their own shopping? wow how modest
the manager at publix : 10/11/05 08:40:24 AM EST
i see beau at publix all the time. he seems to shop daily. i didn't know a single person could put me out of stock on "Crispy Rice" cereal. since i am such a big SS fan, i have said hi to him a time or two. he doesn't seem to mind unless you start grabbing his crotch or sticking your tongue down his throat (which i have tried). he also mentioned to me that CDs were going to be no more than $12 at shows. as a business man, i can assume that the price may increase if there is shipping involved, but if you actually buy a CD at a SS show, you don't have to pay shipping, eh?
jimmy rock : 10/11/05 08:23:49 AM EST
i think i saw beau at publix at ansley mall last night. but didn't want to act like a groupie and bother you while out doing regular person stuff. was that you?
jimmy rock : 10/11/05 08:21:52 AM EST

Dr. Kenneth Noisewater : 10/8/05 05:02:40 PM EST
check out GeoffMelkonian.com for a sneak of two new songs on the album, new if you like new that is, wait what am I talking about, although I am not really talking, I am typing you need to check out the site because also some good local bands as well for expample Modern Skirts are on there and they are .. . . excellent, don't forget to check out the individual band member pics on the left when you click to go to the different pages of this excellent website and remember when you look for second shift on limewire 60% of the time it works all the time.
Spector : 10/8/05 08:38:30 AM EST

shiftasaurus rex. : 10/7/05 09:36:11 AM EST
"right on time" = the first track off of 'boozed and bruised' = now on myspace.com/secondshift
What??? : 10/7/05 03:29:13 AM EST
Second Shift has just responded to what fans have been asking for for a long time now - lots of requests for names and pictures. The band is in fact made up of these people! They're an awesome group of guys who make some really cool music.
Sparks : 10/7/05 02:13:59 AM EST
Self indulgent. Oh yes, thats Second Shift to a T.... Those little dots probably don't mean I'm being ultra sarcastic. Isn't that cool... And oh yeah, members of Second Shift. The next time you have a website made for your band, be sure you don't include a single picture/comment remotely relating to any actual members of the band. This will make you seem less vain...
Myspace : 10/6/05 06:01:08 PM EST
Where are the new songs you guys were gonna put up on your MySpace page leading up to the show? You had one on there for a couple days and then took it off... not i'm all sad.
dmo : 10/6/05 04:58:25 PM EST
do not feed the trolls
there is nothing to see here cant wait for the booze
Important dude : 10/6/05 03:06:06 PM EST
I think Josh needs to go to a message board where people actually care what he thinks... go write your own music and get back to us when you're worth anything.
tentatively offended : 10/6/05 02:04:27 PM EST
what do you mean by that, Josh?
Josh : 10/6/05 09:37:44 AM EST
Self Indulgence is cool if you dont sound like every other band...even if you do rock hard.
Julia : 10/5/05 06:53:24 PM EST
Hey you guys. This seems to be a "Second Shift Fans" message board. We should get the party started, it seems a bit dull. But whatever. Maybe someone from the band will make a SPECIAL ENTRANCE?!
And and yeah. I love the new site <3
aaron : 10/5/05 06:41:46 PM EST
there will be making out? if your luck enough
Johnny Cakes : 10/5/05 05:25:20 PM EST

spector : 10/5/05 01:13:54 PM EST
Josh, when you rock that hard self-indulgence is perfectly acceptable.
Josh : 10/5/05 06:30:13 AM EST

J5Knuckleshuffle : 10/3/05 02:19:52 PM EST
I go to the mall, eat a gyro by myself, and walk up to high school gilrs and I'm all like, "hey baby, I play in a band called 2nd sift." And they're all like, "don't you mean SHIFT?" And I say, "no, stupid, SIFT, we play bluegrass." Then security reminds me I'm not allowed on the premises.
THE END
